The Temple of Apollo
Portara is the massive marble doorway of an unfinished temple dedicated to Apollo,
the ancient Greek god of light and music. Construction began around 530 BC during the rule of the tyrant Lygdamis.
An Unfinished Monument
The temple was never completed because political changes interrupted the project.
While the rest of the structure disappeared over time, the monumental doorway remained standing
for more than 2,500 years.
